A Novel Approach to Power Semiconductor Simulation: Accuracy and Speed without Compromise

In power electronics, the challenge of semiconductor simulations has always been to strike the right balance between accuracy and simulation speed. Engineers typically face a choice between two types of tools with different models: the detailed “Spice” type models, which offer high accuracy but are slow and complex, and the faster ideal models with thermal descriptions derived from loss data tables. Historically, Simba has used the latter, providing engineers with quick simulations and precise power switch loss calculations, easily sourced from datasheets or manufacturer websites.

However, certain design tasks, such as filter design, EMI analysis, or gate driver optimization, necessitate models that can capture the dynamic transients of power switches during their turn-on and turn-off cycles. Addressing this need, Simba’s latest release introduces new models of power switches. This update equips power electronics engineers with a tool that offers both efficient simulation speeds and the detailed transient analysis essential for advanced design tasks.

In this webinar, our team will delve into the new models and the innovative mathematical approach behind them. We will also compare them to classic “Spice” models and detail our validation process for these new models.
